Day by dayItinerary

1

Day 1. Gantiadi (Tsandripsh)

The group will gather in the small Abkhaz resort village of Gantiadi (Tsandripsh) around noon. There we spend a couple of hours at the sea - swimming, relaxing, mentally preparing for the hike :) Towards evening we move to the picturesque Khashupsy canyon (lots of greenery, turquoise water, steep walls) and camp nearby for the night.

2

Day 2. Khashupsy Canyon - Achmarda - Tsandripsh Gorge

We say goodbye to the Khashupsa canyon and move to the village of Achmarda. From here we will find ourselves in an evergreen boxwood grove. Winding along a narrow path, we suddenly discover that we are squeezed into the steep walls of the wild Tsandripsh gorge. Almost no one walks here, only sometimes we will meet lonely horses grazing. Along the bottom of the gorge we will wander into the forest jungle of the Arabica slopes. At one of the sources of the Tsandripsh River we will set up our first mountain camp.

3

Day 3. Arabica Plateau, Galgeluk tract

After breakfast we will begin a leisurely climb to the Arabica plateau. Our goal today is to leave the forest zone and go to the high mountain meadows.

The wild, almost untrodden slope will abound us with its virginity. Here every year we see traces of bears. An inconspicuous path through a dense coniferous forest will end unexpectedly, and at some point we will find ourselves in a small clearing, then in another, larger one. And soon the forest will retreat completely, and even single trees will be left behind. A huge plateau with peaks and valleys will open before us. We will locate our shelter not far from the booth with shepherds called Galgeluk. Here you can get various dairy dishes.

4

Day 4. Caving camp near the Ilyukhin cave, climbing to the Arabica peak 2656m

Along the Galgeluk valley we will go to the speleologists’ camp site, located at the main and eponymous peak of the Arabica massif (2656 meters). On our way here and there there will be small glaciers - snowfields. Gradually, gaining height, the rocky slopes will surround us more and more closely with their massive rock peaks.

In the upper reaches of the Galgeluk Valley, speleologists have been exploring a very deep cave named after them for many years. Ilyukhina. A caving camp is set up here every year. We will set up our camp not far from them, but our day will not end there. Today we are waiting for a radial ascent to the main peak of the entire plateau - Arabica. It is located in the center of the massif and is dominant. The grandiose view from it will probably leave everyone with a long-lasting impression.

Not far from our camp there is another entrance - to the deepest cave in the world, Krubera-Voronya (-2191 m). We will spend this evening in fascinating conversations about the interesting activity of “speleology” and will definitely meet a memorable sunset at the end of the day.

5

Day 5. Stone Treasure Ridge - Dragon Rock - Zou Lake

Today we have to overcome a difficult, but very interesting transition. It would seem that there is no way out of our closed circus above the camp. Sheer cliffs rise all around. How inaccessible mountains can seem, showing their harsh appearance. If you look, there are inaccessible rocks, but if you get closer, you can solve the mystery of the stone chaos and the labyrinth - the passage to the top. We will solve this problem before lunch, winding between craters and rocky ridges until we reach the pass of the Kamenny Klad ridge. We will make a traverse along it to the amazing through rock Dragon. And then the descent to the very picturesque Lake Zou will begin. We will spend another night with him.

6

Day 6. Midday, Dzou tract

On this day you can wake up much later than usual, and then take invigorating water treatments in the lake, and then, perhaps, sunbathing:) The temperature of crystal clear glacial water in August reaches 19 degrees. We are in no hurry, and after three days it is worth replenishing our strength and having a good rest. We will continue our route in the afternoon. A truly fascinating descent into the Zou tract awaits us. We will make our way through the real jungle of the Abkhazian forests, making our way through the tall grasses of meadows unknown to man. We will set up our camp on the edge of a centuries-old fir forest.

7

Day 7. Gegsky waterfall, Pshegishkhva, Lake Malaya Ritsa

The Zou tract is our last stop on Arabica. Today we leave this beautiful country of stone sky. But even saying goodbye to her will not be boring - we will continue our descent into the valley of the Gega River. By lunchtime we will be rewarded - the delightful Gegsky waterfall. Plucking up the courage to take a stunning shower will be a challenge for daredevils. From the waterfall we will begin a leisurely climb along the road to the opposite Arabica massif - Pshegishkhva. Once upon a time there was an all-Union walking route here, crowds of tourists walked here, now the road is little used. Passing the so-called Circassian glades, we will delve into even wilder places - the slopes of Pshegishkhva, overgrown with ferns and burdocks.

In the afternoon we will find ourselves at the pass in front of a huge bed inside the massif. We will be enchanted by the small and very picturesque lake Malaya Ritsa hidden in it. Yes, yes, there is also one that is much less visited and therefore pristine. On its wild, beautiful shore, we will set up our tents. The depth of the crystal clear lake reaches 100m, oddly enough, but the water here warms up to 23 degrees. At the end of the day you will be able to swim to your heart's content and ride on a local catamaran abandoned here.

8

Day 8. Lake Ritsa, Bzyb Canyon, descent to the sea

It will open suddenly. Huge and with many shades of dark green, among the forested slopes of snowy peaks will amaze everyone. It was formed about 1000 years ago. Part of “our” massif fell into the Lashipsu River and dammed it. This is how a lake appeared at an altitude of almost a kilometer above sea level. They named him Ritsa. This is a scientific version, but there are other stories and legends about how this miracle appeared.

After exploring the lake, we will take a chartered bus to the sea. Along the bottom of the Bzyb Gorge, through the deep canyon Yupshar Gate, we will get to the interesting Blue Lake. The unnatural bright blue color of the water is caused by deposits of lapis lazuli at the bottom.

Let's finish the descent in the familiar Gantiadi. Here you can stay in “our” house for speleologists or pitch tents on the coast and spend your final night listening to the sound of the sea surf.

Day 9. Returning home

Today is farewell morning. Before leaving, you can sunbathe and swim in the sea. If you are not in a hurry or have a spare day, it’s great to spend it seeing other sights of Abkhazia: New Athos, Pitsunda, Gagry, and go to Sukhum.

Trip conditions

The route is quite difficult. Large differences in altitude await us (about 1000 m daily), and in some places the slopes are complicated by loose stones, small rocky ledges and slippery grass. Therefore, it is highly recommended to take trekking poles.

In some places the trail will be practically absent and will pass through tall thickets of grass with hogweed. Therefore, it is worth taking care of light protective clothing (long-sleeved shirt and pants) in order to avoid burns.

It is worth taking good care of protection from rain. Two nights on the route will be at an altitude of over 2000 m, they will be the coolest. You should definitely take thermal underwear.
