Moose ran through X-Crimea
🗓 2006-10-09
Today the tourists who took part in the extreme marathon X-Crimea 2006 returned from Crimea. My friends from the Kyiv team “Moose” shared their impressions of this race: the marathon was a real test for us from the very first minutes... We didn’t have time to eat before the start and therefore ran hungry the entire first day. They say this has a good effect on speed, but on the other hand, strength is also needed. Let us return, however, to our competitions. We competed in the M-class on foot, in which about 40 teams of 3 people started.
The first stage, orienteering, took place in the vicinity of the tourist camp of Orliny Zalet. After which the teams headed towards the Grand Canyon. It was already after sunset, it was difficult to navigate in the dense forest, and here the GPS (satellite navigator) provided by our friends from Outdoor Ukraine helped us a lot. Late at night we passed the ruins of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior and at about 4 am we finally decided to take a nap. True, we didn’t sleep for long - at 6 it became light enough and we began our descent into the Grand Canyon of Crimea. We rappelled down 5 pitches and ran along the bottom to the next checkpoint.
There was little water in the canyon and only in the area of the Silver Streams waterfall did we have to soak in the water a little. There was a small half-flooded cave in which we were looking for a control composter. From the waterfall, through the Tea House and Ai-Dimitri, we went to the reservoir, where there was another water stage - a 100-meter swim crossing with all the equipment. Having sailed ours, we rushed towards the Syuren fortress, where the end of the race actually found us.
Exactly the end (time pressure), because there were still more than 40 kilometers left to the finish line. This really didn’t upset us very much - after a 40-hour race we didn’t give a damn about almost everything. Then it turned out that only 2 teams reached the finish line and we finally calmed down.
By the way, there was also a second overnight stay - just like the first time, we slept without a tent, the three of us in a group of 2 sleeping bags. The food taken for the marathon remained practically untouched. Several times we made tea, ate chocolate and... that's it. There was no time for that. A huge pile of things and equipment was not used at all. Next year we will take this into account and significantly reduce the amount of junk we carry.
Although the official results of the X-Crimea 2006 race have not yet been announced, it is already clear that compared to last year’s marathon we performed much better. Completed twice as many stages. So, you see, in a couple of years we will reach the finish line.
