First of all, the glacier lagoon is incredibly beautiful. Secondly, it is very cold. Just an hour ago we stood on a similar beach 50 kilometers to the west and felt fine in windbreakers (standard Icelandic weather - strong wind and +12 with rare rain). But in Jökulsárlón, due to the proximity of the glacier, the climate is much harsher. As soon as I jumped out of the bus, I... no, I didn’t rush to the icebergs, but began frantically unpacking my backpack. In the morning, I imprudently hid the puff at the very bottom and now I urgently needed to correct the situation. I also took out a hat and gloves.
There is also no camping here, and therefore no warm kitchen with shower and toilet. Therefore, after consulting, we decided not to be a hero (not to put up tents next to the icebergs), but to walk here for a couple of hours and in the evening move to a neighboring town with a more normal climate.
An amphibious ride around the lagoon is a standard activity for visitors to Jökulsárlón. To make the walk more fun, a professional stand-up comedian sits on each car and continuously “burns” and “weeps” about the ice, fallen tourists and the Icelandic weather. Our comedian (tour guide) was a stern blonde who spent the entire trip hugging the ice floe.
It’s a special thrill to go to the beach and push ice floes into the ocean. It's nice to participate in the launch of a real iceberg.
