During the Crimean War period the defence of Sevastopol was organized by Commander-in-chief of the fleet Kornilov. On the place where he had been deadly wounded, on the Malakhov barrow a memorial was erected by the sculptor Shreder in accordance with a Bilderling's project in 1895. On a high bastion with the tracks of cannon-balls Commander-in-chief is painted as if pronouncing words which are written on a pedestal: "So defend the Sevastopol". Near the foundation of the monument a figure of sailor Koshka charging the cannon with the cannon-ball in hands is located. The whole height of the monument is 9,1 meters, the height of the bronze statue of Kornilov is 3 meters.
Destructed during the World War 2, monument was rebuilt in 1983 by sculptor Vronsky and architector Gnezdilov.
