Hiking the American way

🗓 2007-08-01

From the stories of my foreign tourists, I have recently developed a certain image of American-style hiking. I’ll try to describe it to you. So, hiking in the USA is primarily hiking in national parks. National parks have many marked trails, bears, and rangers. Since time immemorial, trails have been leading somewhere, bears are looking for food, and rangers day and night explain to tourists how to hide this food from bears.
Near each tourist site, rangers carefully place a so-called Steelbox (an ordinary iron cabinet). At night, all food and tasty-smelling substances (soap, toothpaste, etc.) must be hidden in a closet, otherwise bears will crawl into your tent in search of food. According to the rangers, people don’t have to hide in closets - bears disdain us.
At the entrance to national parks there are huge posters: “Whatever you brought, take it back later.” The call should be taken literally. Even used toilet paper must be taken with you. Violators face a fine of $500. Looking at the heaps of garbage in our mountains, I am also thinking about becoming a ranger and chasing away careless garbage tourists.
American hikes are also characterized by the absence of normal i.e. safe water. All water must be filtered and disinfected with chemicals.
American backpackers eat mostly all sorts of concentrates; they especially love granulabars - slabs of a pressed mixture of nuts, raisins, honey, grains and other goodies. We are practically unfamiliar with camp porridges; many people saw buckwheat for the first time. Oatmeal cookies are also unknown there... Poor Americans.
In general, reviews of hikes in the USA are very good, much better than reviews of hikes in the European Alps. In America, there are still untrodden areas of wild nature, where it is pleasant for a real Indian... that is, a tourist to come.
This is what American campaigns are like, at least in my imagination.
