Romance with the mountains

Romance with the mountains

📍 Carpathians 🗓 2016
Review of the hike to "Highest Peaks", Carpathians July 3-8, 2016

A little life has been lived. My heart is a little sad. I look forward to my next date with the majestic mountains and endless sky.

It all started quite prosaically. I came up with the idea of diversifying my vacation and testing myself for strength. I, a young lady, accustomed to comfort, and therefore went in the opposite direction and my choice fell on a hike. Not just a hike, but a hike in the mountains. And now I’m already monitoring the Internet.

The website Outdoor caught my eye; the detailed information on how to prepare and what to take with you inspired confidence, and I really liked the writing style. Each of the author's recommendations was useful to me. The quality of the sensations you get on your trip greatly depends on what you take with you.

Without thinking twice, I signed up for the next hike along the Montenegrin ridge (I’m not looking for easy ways), bought tickets, packed my backpack, and now I’m on the road. Frankovsk immediately captivated me with its charm of a small, cozy town. If you decide to stay there overnight, I recommend the Pilgrim Hostel, they have very comfortable orthopedic mattresses, after the train, just what the doctor ordered). For lunch, check out the Desyatka pub, excellent cuisine, huge portions, and reasonable prices.

Day X came, having met with the group, we went to the Carpathians. The ascent began, it was difficult, I didn’t expect it to be so difficult, but the trouble began. Fortunately, we didn’t walk for long and after a couple of hours we set up camp.

The guide said that tomorrow would be the most difficult part of the journey, his heart sank somewhere in his heels, but he immediately recovered, that the body would adapt on the second day and the climb would be easier, it was hard to believe). Oleg (our guide) spiced up dinner with mystical stories about forest evil spirits and old kolybas with their inhabitants. My nerves were stretched to the limit, I waited with trepidation for the morning)).

The next day my surprise knew no bounds; I really felt better than on the first day. The climbs didn’t seem so insurmountable, of course it was hard, but this weight was an order of magnitude lighter than yesterday’s, and after we climbed the ridge, a second wind opened up and it seemed to me that I could walk forever.

There was indescribable beauty all around, the mountains were inspiring, I felt wings behind my back. With every step, with every breath, I fell in love with the Mountains. I couldn’t take my eyes off these heights and the magnificent sky; I was breathless and had to stop. I reveled in beauty. Mountains have become my passion. By the way, you shouldn’t be too arrogant and forget about safety rules, you can very easily roll down the slope, rescue sticks help a lot.

Mountains have their own character. We were spoiled for 3 days, we walked in excellent weather, on the 4th day changes came. From the very morning we were enveloped in a thick fog, like a scene from the film Mist. Everything further than 10 steps disappeared from view and the wild wind. Surreal picture. I found myself between worlds where there is no past or future, I don’t remember who I am and where. Not a single thought in my head, just step by step, inhale, exhale, here and now. These transcendental experiences are the greatest experience, and I am grateful to the mountains that I experienced them.

On this day, foresters sheltered us near Goverla, as soon as we settled in it began to rain enormously and under it we slept wonderfully on a wooden bed, slept like a child. The biggest discomfort on the hike was the cold at night, so don’t forget to take warm clothes and sleeping bags, they will be very useful to you.

Then there was the ascent to Hoverla, to say that I liked it, to say nothing, it’s difficult to convey my joy in words. As I climb, my head thinks: I won’t make it, rain is coming. The body is moving. I calm my thoughts... Step... Surprise... Did I really get up... Did I really do it... Admiration for myself overwhelmed me. There are clouds below me, I am standing on the highest point of Ukraine!

On this hike we conquered 3 two-thousand-meter peaks and for me this is a huge achievement that gives me great faith in my abilities. When I looked back, I didn’t believe that I had gone through so much. It is better to go uphill with the intention of a goal that you want to achieve in the near future. At the top, track how the body, mind, what emotions and sensations react, this will greatly help in bringing your intentions to life.

It was unbearable to say goodbye to the mountains; with every meter of height loss, I watched how the nature around me and the air changed. Raising my head, looking at the clouds, I sadly remembered how just yesterday I was there, above the clouds. The people with whom I had the opportunity to spend these 6 days became practically family. And here I am lying on the second berth on the Lviv-Mariupol train and writing these lines and again experiencing the pleasure and inspiration that the mountains gave me.

With love in my heart Natalia Chervonaya, Zaporozhye
