We bought tickets to Almaty for the autumn trip to the Tien Shan, which starts on September 12. This is not to say that they are inexpensive ($400, Air Astana), but they are comfortable - a direct flight from Kyiv to Almaty, only 5 hours in the air. From Moscow (S7, with a transfer in Novosibirsk) you can get to Kazakhstan a little cheaper - for about $300.
