Golden Gate

Golden Gate

Russian-language article (translation in progress).

Golden Gate in KievOne of the few surviving monuments of Kyiv's ancient past, the Golden Gate was erected in 1017 and is located in the Upper Town, also known as Old Kyiv. Unfortunately this remarkable fortification built during the reign of Prince Yaroslav the Wise, who added a small chapel (the Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary) at the top of the structure and whose monument appears on the western side of the gate, is closed for repairs now. There doesn't actually appear to be much being done, however, but who are we to object to interesting sights being closed during tourist season?

The scaffolding sadly obscures what was excellently restored from ruins in 1983, when the museum was also opened. The ground floor contains exhibits relating to the city's medieval history; upstairs halls display ancient armaments and site excavations; and visitors can take in a panoramic view of Kyiv from the balcony. Normally open May - Oct, 10:00 - 17:00. Closed Tue.
