Demerdji - Valley of Ghosts

There is a great amount of quaint pyramids, stakes, towers on the southeastern downhill of Demerdji mountain, in the Ghosts Valley. One of the stakes - Giant - is the stone bulk with 5 m. in diameter rising in height of 25 m. The stakes and columns 10-20 m. heighted heap up on Giant's sides. There are more than hundred of similar stone ghosts here. Near the top of Demerdji mountain another statues look like being waiting in the sculpturer's workshop for the final treatment. From far distance these stakes resemble giant fossilized belemnits - 'devil's fingers'.

Grandiose collapses caused by earthquakes take place sometimes and form immense chaoses. Such is the chaos emerged in neighbourhood in Ghosts Valley as a result of collapses in 1894, 1968, 1982 years. Vast territories along Demerdji escarp developed to be piled up with chaotic sharptopped conglomerative blocks; some of them are of four - floored buildings size. General volume of mammock chaos exceeds 4 mln. cubic meters. It is the beautiful 'sea of stones'.

The pebble and boulders of the conglomerates are of great scientific interest. These are the ancient rocks, aged 800 mln. - 1,1 mlrd. years. This is the unique place where one can meet the mysteries of geologic history of Crimea.

Scientists, tourists and camerawork groups are eternally attracted with the primitive beauty of Demerdji gorge.
